Who Should Diagnose PMDD
Q: Who is best qualified to make a diagnosis of PMDD -- a gynecologist, a
psychologist, or another physician?
--S. F.
Dr. Donnica: It depends on the awareness of the individual physician
rather than their particular specialty. I would hope that all gynecologists,
psychiatrists, and primary care physicians are aware of the criteria for this
diagnosis. Psychologists, while not physicians, should also be well trained
in the diagnostic criteria for PMDD.
If you are concerned that you or a loved one may have this condition and are
asking which type of health care provider you should consult, my answer would
be to start with the physician with whom you have the best relationship. There's
nothing wrong with beginning the discussion with "I am concerned that I
may have PMDD" and then letting the doctor ask you questions that will
either support that diagnosis or point to an alternative.
