Bumps On The Cervix
Q: I have recently noticed several bumps on my cervix. I was told that it is
normal to have bumps on your cervix and that the cervix is not smooth like we
believe it is. Is this true or do I need to be concerned?
Dr. Donnica: In general, the cervix is pretty smooth, but there
are some "bumps" that may be perfectly normal. The most common condition is
called "Nabothian cysts" -- think of these as little cervical pimples. They
have no consequence and need no treatment. (They are generally more common in
pregnancy.)
There are other cervical "bumps" that are not normal, however, so I recommend
that you consult your gynecologist for an internal exam. One common example
of abnormal bumps is cervical warts, caused by the sexually transmitted infection
HPV or human papilloma virus. It is also possible-although rare-to have a cervical
fibroid or a cancerous lesion.
